What makes a lamp, a lamp? And how simple can it be? The Luminare collection answers these questions with its composition of four basic elements that intertwine to form a sleek and geometric expression of a traditional ceiling lamp. Hernan Gregorio, the designer, aimed to reflect on all stages of design, using Dieter Rams' ten design principles as a reference. Through this design, he conveys a design philosophy that goes beyond aesthetics.
The Luminare lamps are made using sustainable materials, with the frame crafted from different types of plywood. The manufacturing process involves CNC cutting the plywood, followed by sanding and protecting it with varnish or oil. The lamps feature standard electric cables, ensuring ease of use and compatibility.
Each lamp in the Luminare collection varies in dimensions, with an overall size of approximately 250mm x 250mm x 350mm. The design's simplicity and geometric form make it a versatile addition to any space, whether it's a modern home or a contemporary office.
During the design process, Hernan Gregorio conducted extensive research on the history of luminaires, focusing on the most iconic products and their recognizable shapes. He developed numerous drawings and prototypes, seeking feedback from colleagues and individuals outside the design world. The unanimous recognition of the lamp shape, even without a lightbulb, validated the effectiveness of his design iterations.
One of the main challenges faced by the designer was to address all requirements and ideas in a simple yet impactful way. Additionally, he aimed to adhere to the lifecycle of the products and incorporate the ten design principles set by Dieter Rams. Another significant challenge was designing the lamps using only a CNC router as the manufacturing process.
The Luminare collection not only showcases the designer's creativity and technical skills but also emphasizes sustainability. The lamps utilize natural materials that are recyclable, compostable, and biodegradable, aligning with the growing need for eco-friendly design solutions.
The Luminare collection, with its minimalistic and geometric expression, challenges conventional lamp designs and offers a fresh perspective on lighting solutions. Hernan Gregorio's innovative approach and adherence to design principles have earned him the Bronze A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures category in 2019. This prestigious accolade recognizes designs that exhibit outstanding creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life.
